Title Tag Definition

It is the instruction that tells a search engine and browsers what message your web page will be identifying if it is displayed. This is very important for SEO, usability and social sharing.

Keyword/s: Typically on the page “keyword tags” are identified like this: keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3 etc.. There are other types of meta tags that get picked up by search engines, including the “meta description” tag, but are generally very small and are sometimes ignored.

The person who searches the web can click on the URL and get taken to this page. When going through a website, decide which word or words you would know are the most important and put it there.

Why Is My Title Tag Important?

There are several reasons title tags are important such as for usability, SEO, and social sharing:

Title Tags: An example of an actual title tag.

Webpage Title: when Google sees your title, is it all of your title tags?

Education Title: thought only a few years ago, this title was relevant. Today, perhaps this is the least important title tag.

Webpage Description: The second most important title tag is your webpage description – the one that is visible to browsers or your visitors in the form of a snippet of text in search results. So your title tag is just the first sentence in your description.

Off Page SEO: coming up with title tags is just one step in the process of making your website more relevant for searches. Here are two reasons you should make title tag a key factor in that process.

Web Spam: title tag spiders. In common webmaster speak they are called “robots.” These are search engine robots that crawl through all your website pages. Once they have collected all your site’s important information, these robots go off and try to find pivotal information on other attributes of your website.

On Page SEO: the other extremely important factor of on-page SEO is your title tag. What the on page SEO community we folks call the “Theme.” Yes, you need to take your title and theme and put them together. This is the title tag that you want people to see, and has the maximum impact on rankings and SEO.

So, for instance, your website’s theme could record your impression on a certain video game, but then what if you had a tagline that said “we do not sell or play anymore video games” – then you need to make title tag lines that have a theme that works in conjunction with your tags. Thus, your title tag should reflect these two elements.

Optimize Your Title Tags

The less words you use in your title tag the more leverage you have when it comes to SEO. What I primarily do in my title tags is to use as many sought after keywords as possible, they should also be incorporated into a tag line as many search engines will give more weight to a title tag that is composed of your keywords. For instance I can see my title tag would have some tricks to search engines being able to determine that I want my tag line to be. The trick is to write as if you were writing for the human audience and let the title tag do what it does best.

My personal trick version is it is a personal touch in my title tag, but in the end it all comes down to a title tag that describes the website/page that it is predominantly on, maybe a taster of what the website/page is all about.

SEO is a complex science, but one thing is unshakeable: the importance of meta titles and meta descriptions. Although some SEO professionals consider them outdated search engine optimization methods, they still contain a lot of value. Before we start talking about how important meta titles and their length are to SEO, let’s define the difference between meta titles and descriptions.

A meta description is a meta tag that is placed in the HTML code and describes the contents of a page. It is simply the meta tags that provide a description of what the page is about and what is embedded in it.

A meta title tag is an HTML code tag that tells search engines and web browsers what the title of your website is. It informs the search engine, web browser and other web users what titles the web pages have. Meta title tags are very short code snippets that tell you what the titles of a website are.

Do not confuse the meta title tag for search optimization with the header (html) tag, which is part of the page body. If the title is always part of a page and the addition of a word such as meta is not necessary, the alternative name tag should include the meta titles and page titles as alternatives to the name tags.

It is also good practice to put the keywords optimized for your content in the meta title. Ensuring some of the keywords for the page are in the meta title and keeping it short is important so that it can be read by people on small devices. Since this is the most important aspect, make sure you if possible you add the keyword at the beginning of the meta title or description.

The title and meta description labels should contain what they describe, and this should be included in their description. Since Google is likely to define the description of your website based on the content on your site, it is beneficial to write an effective meta description. One of the fastest ways to get an idea of how to write a great meta title and a meta description is to just search for your competitors on Google.

One way to match your meta title and description is that you must do it in a compelling way, but if you don’t, it will damage your search results page. If your page does not rank by your target keywords, then you need to behave yourself and complete your entire meta description to click through. If you do, you will most likely increase the traffic to your website and your results will increase if you write better meta titles and meta descriptions. You can even go so far as to make the entire description of the meta match your expectations and get all the SEO magic.
